PILLAR vs The Police
Friend, in just 8 days, we’ll be in court backing @AucklandCitizen against the police who wrongfully arrested him.
Our lawyer is locked in. The evidence is ready.
And on the 12th of February, we’ll stand in court to make sure justice is upheld.
In a free and democratic country, a case like this shouldn’t exist.
But when public servants, judges, and lawmakers lose themselves in jargon, bureaucracy, and virtue signalling, they lose sight of the simple freedoms that underpin a healthy civil society.
We are constantly told that freedom is “complex” and “nuanced.” In reality, it is usually very simple.
On that day in December, @AucklandCitizen was well within his rights to conduct a silent audit. The fact that an angry mob disagreed did not erase those rights. The police decision to remove a peaceful individual, rather than address a physically intimidating crowd, was a clear and undeniable infringement on those rights. Pure and simple.
When we started PILLAR, we knew we wanted to stand for people whose rights were being ignored or trampled. And when we step into that courtroom on 12 February, that is exactly what we will do.
This is work we’re proud and deeply honoured to do. As we serve the people of New Zealand by defending their civil liberties, our hope is that more and more people will find their voice and join us in speaking up and standing firm.
PILLAR was not built to be a one-trick pony or a short-term campaign. We are here for the long haul, and we will fight on every front where civil liberties are under threat. Were building a movement that will spread a greater awareness and respect for civil liberties across the country and even abroad
We’re grateful for your support. Every like, comment, follow, email, and generous donation makes this work possible.
This legal battle has the potential to set an important precedent. No New Zealander should ever be arrested for peacefully exercising their rights. This is the first of many fights we intend to take on and win.
If you are able, would you consider two things that will help us succeed:
First, please share this email with friends and family, or share our posts about this case — You can find them HERE and HERE.
Second, please consider donating to the legal defence. Helping us defend @AucklandCitizen’s rights is an investment in defending your own.
We’ll keep you updated on how this case unfolds and continue to keep you informed about threats to civil liberties across New Zealand.
Friend, thank you for standing with us.
